Which smartphones will be announced at this year’s MWC? That’s THE question for the mobile-savvy community and currently, the rumours are heating up. One thing is for sure: We will see some brand-new devices with exciting features. But which ones will it be? We dug into the latest reports and rumours to present you our top predictions for Mobile World Congress 2018.
Samsung Galaxy S9
It is now officially confirmed that we can expect the Samsung Galaxy S9 at the Mobile World Congress next month. This week, Samsung finally sent out invites for their launch event, which will be held on the 25th of February (one day before the MWC starts). The unpacking will be live-streamed on Samsung’s website at 6 p.m. CET, so stay tuned!
But what can we expect from their latest flagship smartphone? As we don’t know much about it, we can only base our predictions on rumours. Since Samsung introduced the Infinity Display just last year, the looks of the new model might not be too different from the Galaxy S8. One thing that might change indeed is the much-hated placement of the fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy S8 had it right next to the camera sensor, almost certainly causing smudged lenses, which annoyed many customers. It was also placed extremely high up on the device, which made it hard to reach. Based on some leaked renderings, the finger scanner of the Galaxy S9 is expected to be beneath the camera lens in the middle of the device’s back, right where it should be.
A leaked picture of the smartphone’s packaging promises other exciting features: There will be a new “Super Speed” 12 MP camera sensor on the S9, with a variable camera lens aperture of F1.5 (!) and F2.4. So hopefully, we will have much better low-light photos with the Galaxy S9. Furthermore, we can finally expect stereo speakers on the Galaxy S9.
During recent weeks, there has been a lot of buzz around Huawei’s new “P” line. Last year the Chinese company released the P10 at MWC and before that the P9, so it would make sense that the P11 will follow. But according to inside sources, it now seems likely they will skip several numbers and the new models will be named P20, P20 Plus, and P20 Pro.
The P20 Pro could have a notch similar to the iPhone X and feature a 3D depth-sensing-camera. But will it also have face recognition like Apple’s newest device? Huawei has presented its own face unlock module last year, but the prototype was still way too big to fit into a smartphone. It will be interesting to see if they managed to integrate it in their new devices.
Furthermore, some exciting reports about the P20 models were leaked a few days ago, which are stating that there will be triple cameras on the back of each device! And if the rumours from China are true and Huawei is still working with camera brand Leica, we can expect great devices at the Mobile World Congress 2018.
Sony Xperia XZ Pro
Another smartphone we are really excited about is Sony’s new flagship device. The Japanese company introduced three smartphones at CES already but apparently saved the best ones for the MWC next month.
Their long-awaited Xperia XZ Pro will possibly be the company’s most expensive device. The rumour mill is in full spin and reports that we will see Sony’s new device sporting a 5.7-inch OLED display with 4K resolution! You think 4K is too much for a smartphone? Let’s see in a month!
Of course, we will see many more new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress, like Lenovo’s Moto X5 or Nokia’s ultimate flagship, the Nokia 9.
We at Testbirds definitely can’t wait to discover all these amazing smartphones in real life and finally add them to our device list in the Nest!
