What Could 2018 Bring for the Smartphone? Here’s Our Top 5 Predictions!

Ahead of our visit to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 26th February – 1st March, we at Testbirds are going to give you our top 5 smartphone predictions for 2018. Who knows, we might even see some of our forecasts proved correct at MWC in just over a months’ time!

1) Wireless charging will become more popular:

Most smartphone companies already offer some form of wireless QI charging systems. However, wireless charging has not quite caught traction on a large scale yet but we expect this to change. Companies like Apple have departed from the conventional materials of aluminum and metal to make their smartphones, in favour of the wireless-friendly materials of glass and plastic. Therefore, an increase in the use of such materials will inevitably lead to an increase in wireless charging.

2) Improved Battery Life

Our lives are more connected than ever and smartphones arguably play the most important part in this. Naturally, an increase in connectivity and usage brings with it more pressure on battery life and this is something that must improve. In 2017 we saw devices like the HTC U11 being able to carry 3,000 mAh and it is thought that batteries of this size will become more common this year. Fear not, it appears that battery drain could soon be no more!

3) A New iPhone?

With the success of the iPhone X, there has been widespread speculation that we might see another new release before the year is out. It is possible that iPhone will continue to expand their edge-to-edge display with a screen in excess of 6 inches. Continuing the departure from conventional mobile displays in favour of the much larger ‘phablet’ style.

4) Samsung S9 and S9+ Specifications

Samsung have confirmed that the S9 and S9 + will be released at MWC next month, but what might the specifications of the new devices consist of? Our research suggests that the devices will include 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches curved displays respectively and up to 265GB of storage. Also, the devices are expected to include a rear fingerprint scanner and Samsung’s Bixby AI assistant! Despite being late to the party compared to their competitors, seeing how the devices will rival things like the iPhone X’s facial recognition system has led to great intrigue from the world of tech and beyond.

5) The birth of the foldable smartphone

Imagine having a smartphone that is not only touch screen, high resolution and constantly connected to the internet but also able to fold in half to fit snuggly into your jacket pocket. The foldable smartphone has been something that has been on the horizon for a number of years now, with LG’s proof of concept in the form of the G Flex released in 2013. Furthermore, early this year Apple filed for a US patent for a foldable phone and Samsung are also rumoured to be developing something of a similar nature. This means that, at the very least, efforts are being made by Apple and Samsung to experiment with the undeniable convenience of developing a foldable smartphone for their customers.

Of course, none of our predictions could come true, but that is simply the volatile nature of the world of tech. However, I’m sure you’d agree that 2018 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for smartphone users. There is no better place to foster the excitement for smartphone developments than at MWC on 26th Feb – 1st March.
